THE Zone 4.5 Chess Championship is in full swing at the Urban Hotel in Lusaka, Zambia, with players from across the region competing for top honours.

In the Open section, International Master (IM) Stanley Chumfwa of Zambia currently leads the pack with 4.5 points after five rounds.

Close on his heels are IM Providence Oatlhotse of Botswana and IM Kelvin Chumfwa, also of Zambia, with four points each.

The Zimbabwean contingent has had a tougher time, with Vitalis Mapuranga and Spencer Masango sitting on 1.5 points out of five games.

In a dramatic turn of events, one of the tournament favourites IM Gillian Bwalya of Zambia lost to the tournament leader, IM S Chumfwa, in round four and subsequently pulled out of the competition.

In the Ladies’ round-robin section, the race for the title is heating up between Christine Makwena of Zimbabwe and Naomi Mwale of Zambia, both with 4.5 points from five games.

The two leaders will face off in a highly anticipated round six match, while Mwale will also be tested by Zimbabwe’s Woman Candidate Master Refiloe Mudodo in round seven.

Another Zimbabwean, Tatenda Ndou currently occupies the sixth spot out of ten ladies, with two points out of 5 games played.

In the Developmental U16 Open section, Candidate Master Kennedy Shane of Zambia is leading with a perfect score and Alinuswe V Namwai is also leading in the developmental- U16 Girls section.

Zimbabwean FIDE Master (FM) Roy Mwadzura and FM Chola Musonda of Zambia emerged as the joint champions of the prestigious 2024 Minerva International Chess Open.

The two players finished the tournament with an impressive 8 points out of 9 games.

The title race came down to the wire, with Mwadzura’s superior tiebreak (Bucholz) score ultimately earning him the coveted gold medal.

Musonda, his Zambian opponent, claimed the silver medal.

Rounding out the podium was FM Banele Mhango of South Africa, who scored 7.5 points to clinch the bronze.

The Minerva Open attracted a strong lineup, including International Masters from Zimbabwe, Zambia, and Botswana.

Zimbabwe’s first black International Master (IM) Kudzanai Mamombe, Zambia’s Gillan Bwalya, and Botswana’s Providence Oathlotse were among the notable participants.

Last edition’s joint winner IM Bwalya, who missed the first round, eventually finished with 6.5 points from 8 games.

The tiebreaker match between Mwadzura and Musonda in the eighth round was a thriller, with Musonda forcing a draw through a perpetual check.

However, the two champions weathered the storm in their final-round games, with Mwadzura defeating fellow countryman and defending champion FM Zhemba Jemusse and Musonda overcoming IM Providence Oathlotse in a tense encounter.

In the women’s section, Refiloe Mudodo of Zambia emerged victorious, scoring an impressive 8.5 points out of 9 games.

Her performance was described as “top-drawer” and “scintillating,” with her dominant display captivating the online audience.

The Minerva Open witnessed a record-breaking turnout, with 200 participants.

The tournament was meticulously organized by the Zimbabwe Chess Federation and generously sponsored by Harare-based Minerva Risk Advisors.

International Arbiter Simbarashe Murimi was leading the team of arbiters, including FA Jarmil Ndoro and a dedicated group of volunteers.

The Minerva Open has once again cemented its reputation as a premier event in the chess calendar, attracting the finest players from the region.

The fourth edition of the Minerva International Chess Open is underway, with FIDE Master (FM) Jemusse Zhemba leading the open section after five rounds of strong competition on Thursday at Joina City in Harare, Zimbabwe.

FM Zhemba, who has maximum points, continued his strong performance by defeating Spencer Masango in the fifth round. Zhemba’s tactical strength was on full display, as he managed to gain a piece advantage over Masango, ultimately leading to a winning position.

The tournament has seen its fair share of surprises, with International Master Gillan Bwayla of Botswana making a late surge after missing the first round. Bwayla currently sits on 3.5 points after being held to a draw by Tapiwa Rukara.
